Celebrate and honor the family
Families can be big or small, made up of relatives or friends or even pets. Families are as unique as the individuals in it. The commonality between all families is that every member has to put in effort to make it work.
According to Lucy Schrader, Building Strong Families program coordinator, each person’s definition of family is different and it is important to communicate with our own family members, including children and teens, about who makes up our family – the people, the roles, and what makes the family unique and special. This conversation can also be a way to open up the lines of communication.
Schrader emphasizes the importance of communication with all family members, including children, and the need to recognize the way we communicate.
National Family Week is an annual celebration observed during the week of Thanksgiving. Take time to reflect on your own family during this week. Listen to the Celebrate and Honor the Family podcast on the Extension on the Go blog to learn more about families and get tips on ways you can strengthen your own family relationships.
